Topics

What I can talk about

  • Reading ingredient lists: what the label says and what it means
  • Why a single study is not yet proof
  • Nutrition and nutrients between evidence and promise
  • How health myths take hold — and why they work so well
  • Computational chemistry: studying molecules inside a computer
  • Venomous animals and their toxins: twenty years of research, in plain language
  • What a chemist knows about cosmetics and household products
  • Explaining science without dumbing it down

Interviews in German, English and French. As a chemistry teacher since 2008 I speak in front of an audience regularly. On camera and on air I stay calm and avoid jargon.

60 words

Dr Holger Scheib is a chemist, entrepreneur and author. For twenty years he studied how molecules act in the body, at the Nestlé Research Center, at GlaxoSmithKline and at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, publishing in Nature, PNAS and the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. Today he teaches chemistry and, as “The HealthChemist”, explains what is proven about ingredients — and what is merely claimed.

150 words

Dr Holger Scheib is a chemist, entrepreneur, teacher and author. After a doctorate at the University of Stuttgart and a master's at the University of Cincinnati, he spent two decades working at the intersection of chemistry, biology and computing: as Head of Structural Bioinformatics at the University of Geneva, as Senior Scientist at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, at GlaxoSmithKline and at the Nestlé Research Center, where he led Computational Molecular Sciences. His work appeared in Nature, PNAS, Structure, the EMBO Journal and the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, and he remains an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Queensland. Since 2008 he has taught chemistry at Kantonsschule Solothurn. He is the founder and managing director of CuraCap GmbH and a co-founder of the nutrition app Naviyara. As “The HealthChemist” he writes about ingredients and nutrition, labelling every claim visibly: proven, plausible or hypothesis. His book on hair and scalp health is forthcoming.
